mumof4 Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 This appeared today whilst i was driving. It wasnt hit by anything, there is no raised edge on the inside or outside, it goes all the way to the top as far to the seal, Now, ive already rung the peeps up that fitted the screen in april, they claim its not their fault the window is cracked and wont replace it. When the screen was replaced, it was found that the screen they removed had not been fitted peoperly and there was rust around where the screen goes. they told me that if the screen cracked because of rust, it wouldnt be covered by their warrenty. i believe there is water under the top of the screen, but i cant be sure as its been peeing it down all day, and it was raining when it happened. So guys, i need your help, why would a screen crack like that in just under 5 months. Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) Could be several reasons, most likely a stone chip that several days after the event has suddenly cracked out. AFAIK virtually all insurance policies have windscreen replacement cover for a little or sometimes no excess. (mine is Edited September 5, 2008 by seatkid Quote
mumof4 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 ive already had it looked it, there is no stone chip.. there were no vehicles passing me when it happened, its a clean crack so to speak ( no mucky comments please  ) As i popped into a garage on the way home wanting their opinion on why it would just crack. it goes up to the seal and looks like it goes under the seal. It was Autoglass that fitted the screen IIRC Ive already battled with them once on the phone over this.. my excess is 75 quid. It is written on my receipt that if the screen cracks because of pre existing rust, then they will not replace the screen under the warrenty. Quote
mumof4 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 here is my original thread, you can see the rust at the top. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...c=16065&hl= Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Seesh....what a mess.......what can I say? ebay! This should have been an issue you took up with the previous owner. Step 1. "Lose" the receipt Step 2. Drive into a previously unused/not-contacted Autoglass depot. Tell them it was replaced 5 months ago by Autoglass but can't find the receipt. Smile and flash those pretty eyes  .....a lot..... Quote
mumof4 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 Gawd... could that rust, be the cause of the glass cracking though?? Flash my pretty eyes... heck..thats a tall order!! Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Wouldnt have thought rust would have made any difference. Go to non Autoglass centre e.g. RAC windscreens and ask their opinion why its cracked - dont mention the rust, but say Autoglass fixed it 5 months ago and you dont trust them that they've done the job right. I always found them friendly.. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 The guarantee is for the life of the vehicle . If someone could explain how rust could crack the glass after the technician has replaced the old glass I would be very interested. The rust would have had to have "grown" by a heck of a lot to make the glass crack - I don't think it could do that - the worst it would do is to lift the glass and make it leak - but I doubt even that. Either the techy didn't fit it correctly or there is another reason. Just tell them it cracked and you want a replacement - oh and by the way you don't want any more caveats about rust - they either fit it properly or they don't. Quote
seatkid Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Or contact the insurance company and complain about Autoglass fobbing you and not guaranteeing their work. All insurers insist that repair work is guaranteed. Quote
MadBaz Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 If there was a bit of rust then why didn't the techy wire brush it off???? after all it's not like it's summat you can remedy after the new glass is fitted is it? Same as having tyres fitted and the rim not been wire brushed beforehand..... Quote
gregers Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 phone up the trade and standards peeps, get there advice then contact auto glass with the info gleaned from the t&s (hopefully good news)then wait for there reaction,im pretty sure they will renew it. also contact(if youve got it?)your legal fees dept within your insurance and see what they say. mumof4 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 Thanks for the advice peeps, the techy did wire brush where the rust was. Tomoz, i shall re arm and fire at autoglass, i shall also get a second opinion as to why the screen cracked like it has. Will it matter that ive changed insurance company since the screen was fitted? mumof4 Posted September 25, 2008 Author Report Posted September 25, 2008 hmmm..not heard this before... how do you know this?? and how would i check if that is what caused it?? as i have no service history with the car, nor know of any clutch/ gear work done prior to me buying the car in april. Quote
ali tdi Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 have a couple of friends that work for ford in colchester and one have done just thing im talking about on a mk2 51 plate. the only you could check is to look at subframe bolts and around the holes to see if any rust movement or even bolts r lose. Scorpiorefugee Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Mo4, I am amazed that you look after 4 kids, fix your car and find time to listen to us lot. I would have thought that that alone would be a good reference to get most jobs. Re your screen, I had a similar experience a few years ago when I damaged the screen loading 3 3m lengths of worktop into a granada. The crack took 2 years to spread and I eventually got it fixed in Chester one afternoon. The following morning at 5:30, I was driving past Luton and heard a slight crack and when I finally stopped I had a 5mm crack coming from the edge near the tax disc. (12 hours after I collected it) No sign of a chip and I remain convinced that it was caused by pressure and a bit of flexing. The fitters refused to accept any responsibility so I put up with it for a year as it spread across the screen before getting it replaced. I did another 100k in the car with no further problem. So, if you've other things to worry about, live with it until you have to get it fixed. Re the internet and insurance, I get all three of ours insured for less than Quote
